In 1999 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) developed a report called the “Report on Electric and Gas Clothes Dryers.” In it they state that about 75% of households have a clothes dryer which means that roughly 75 million households have a gas or electric clothes dryer in the United States. The report also showed that in 1996 as a sample year, over 15,000 fires, 20 deaths, over 300 injuries and over $80 million in property damage occurred from just dryer fires.>
Of the 15,000 fires, electric dryers were over 2.5 times more likely to be the cause of the fire than gas dryers. This is often due to the higher heat discharge from electric dryers which exacerbates the lint buildup problem. You see, fires originated most frequently from two places: dryer venting and the lint trap. It is a good idea to get your dryer vent cleaned once a year. the cost is usually between $69-$100.
